Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan, prepare, set out and install or repair internal timber flooring directly to joists and over sheet subfloors and external decking to joists in domestic and commercial settings. This unit applies to flooring technicians installing flooring in accordance with pre-determined work orders.There are no specific licensing requirements directly associated with this unit, however, some jurisdictions require the holder of this unit to be licensed or certified and users should check with the relevant authorities. Industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must also be applied. Access to construction sites requires certification of general induction training covered by the National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work (ASCC 2007).

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Determine job requirements
  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Comply with work health and safety requirements at all times
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with SOPs
  • Identify job requirements from plans, specifications, drawings, quality requirements and operational details
  • Confirm subfloor suitability for installation consistent with Australian Standards and manufacturer recommendations
  • Identify and implement signage and/or barricade requirements
  • Inspect subfloor and joists for flatness and structural integrity and correct as required in accordance with SOPs
  • Inspect timber flooring material and confirm species, grade, size and quantity against work orders
  • Moisture check timber using required equipment and confirm suitability of moisture content for site conditions as per pre-site inspection procedures
  • Set out and plan installation method in accordance with job requirements
  • Prepare materials in accordance with client specifications

  • Select appropriate flooring materials for the intended use according to specifications
  • Confirm floor measurements and flooring materials to ensure minimum waste and prepare for installation
  • Install flooring, as specified by the client, using suppliers recommended products ensuring product is installed and secured to manufacturer recommendations, industry and Australian Standards
  • Complete installed flooring in preparation for sanding and finishing

  • Store and recycle unused materials in accordance with workplace procedures
  • Check, clean and store tools and equipment in accordance with workplace procedures
  • Clean work area and dispose of rubbish safely
  • Accurately complete required workplace documentation

Assessment Tasks
